FMGE - National Board of Examination's Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Test

FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Test) is an examination conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) in India. This test is designed for foreign medical graduates who wish to practice medicine in India. It serves as an eligibility criterion for such graduates to obtain a provisional or permanent registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council (SMC).

The FMGE is a computer-based test that assesses the medical knowledge and understanding of the candidates. It evaluates their ability to apply concepts and principles of medicine in clinical scenarios. The examination is held twice a year, in June and December, at various designated test centers across India.

The FMGE syllabus covers all the subjects taught during the MBBS course, including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Community Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, and Anaesthesiology.

To be eligible for the FMGE, candidates must possess a primary medical qualification, which is recognized by the concerned Indian Embassy/High Commission. They need to provide a document, such as the "Eligibility Certificate" issued by the Medical Council of India, to prove their eligibility for the examination.

The FMGE consists of 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with each question carrying one mark. The duration of the examination is three hours and thirty minutes. The questions cover both pre-clinical and clinical aspects of medicine. The passing criteria for the FMGE is 150 marks out of 300.

Candidates who clear the FMGE are eligible to apply for provisional or permanent registration with the MCI or SMC. This registration allows them to practice medicine in India. However, it is important to note that clearing the FMGE does not guarantee a job or admission to a postgraduate medical course. It is solely an eligibility test for registration purposes.

In conclusion, the FMGE is a crucial examination for foreign medical graduates aspiring to practice medicine in India. It evaluates their medical knowledge and understanding, ensuring that they meet the required standards set by the NBE. By clearing the FMGE, candidates can obtain registration with the MCI or SMC, enabling them to pursue their medical career in India.
